A quarter-final appearance at Roland Garros has brought a glimmer of hope to any Nikolay Davydenko fans who think the Russian will make it past the first week at Wimbledon for only the second time in eight outings.
The world number 11 showed patches of his best with impressive wins over Stanislas Warwinka and Fernando Verdasco in Paris, before a crushing defeat by Robin Soderling in the last eight brought him back down to earth with a bump.
And while clay so often brings out the best in Davydenko, grass so often doesn't. With only four wins at the All England Club in seven years, history suggests the 28-year-old's unspectacular 2009 is set to continue.
